Partners in Care: 'Hold fast and stay true'

Joan Coffman, jcoffman@stph.org

Dear Partner in Care,

It is hard to believe 2022 is almost over and that we’re already at that point in the year – with its shorter days and increase in obligations – that things seem to go so, so quickly.

With that in mind, I found myself recalling a recent discussion about the old nautical commands “Hold fast and stay true.”

They come from the days in which wooden ships plied the seas, and they would be shouted out when a vessel found itself heading into turbulent waters.

“Hold fast” was intended to warn crew members to hang on tightly to whatever was nearby to avoid being washed overboard.

“Stay true” was to encourage whomever was at the helm to stay focused on the compass and keep the ship on its intended course and heading for its intended direction.

Today, with so many distractions swirling about, it is worth keeping in mind. So: Remember to hold fast, fellow partners in care – and to stay true to our shared commitment of keeping our community healthy.

I’ll also add to that a sincere Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, Blessed Kwanzaa or whatever year-end observance you hold dear.

Gratefully,

Joan M. Coffman, FACHE
